June 2025: The News You Need

The News You Need is your monthly snapshot of the latest updates and opportunities from TPA. Whether it's upcoming events or ways to get involved, this newsletter keeps you informed and connected to the psychology community across Texas.

A Message From TPA

The devastating flooding and loss of life across Central Texas this past weekend have been heartbreaking, and the images and stories coming out are truly unimaginable. We know that for many of us, this isn't just something happeningout there. Some of you may have loved ones, hometowns, or memories tied to the communities now facing loss and devastation.

TPA’s Disaster Recovery Network is here to provide up-to-date scientific research and community resources available under any circumstances, making the dispersal of that information less of a funnel and more collaborative.

Some organizations to consider partnering with:

We suggest that practitioners volunteer with known organizations with a track record of providing assistance to those impacted. Providing services in a disaster is a unique skill set, and being involved as a volunteer within those organizations gives a better understanding of what is needed.

We recommend you volunteer, volunteer, volunteer! Donate your time or your money. Advocate for more resources from those in positions to provide them. As psychologists, we understand the impact any disaster can have on someone using the most up-to-date science. There is more to "responding" that a psychologist can do than only providing a therapeutic intervention.

Introducing "Voices in Practice" Connected Community Thread

Psychology students have consistently expressed a strong desire for education and mentorship that feels relevant and practical to their current stage of life. To better address this, TPA has partnered with the Student Senate to gather questions that matter most to them.

Now, we need your expertise to provide meaningful guidance. That's why we're excited to launch Voices in Practice, a new monthly feature where we'll share these questions on behalf of the students.

This initiative can only succeed if experienced members like you actively participate and share your insights. So please, dive in and contribute your knowledge by responding to our first question.

Which certifications offer the most value to clinicians and deliver a solid return on investment?

Don’t have anything else to add to the discussion? We still want to hear from you! Be on the lookout for next month’s question or jump in on our “Get Connected” thread where your peers have started introducing themselves!

Welcome to the New Student Senate Executive Committee!

We’re excited to announce the incoming 2025–2026 Student Senate leadership:

  • President-Elect: Malvika Narayan, Texas Tech University

  • Vice President-Elect: Renee Frederick, University of Houston

  • President Pro Tempore-Elect: Linda Hernandez, University of Houston – Clear Lake

A Year of Growth and Impact

The 2024–2025 term was a dynamic and productive year for the TPA Student Senate. The senate welcomed new members from eight psychology doctoral programs across Texas, significantly expanding student representation. A major milestone included strengthening the student scholarship program, which supported 13 of 16 senators in attending the TPA Annual Conference in Fort Worth. There, students presented research and the executive committee led a timely session on proposed changes to the EPPP and the implications for future psychologists.

Student senators also served on TPA’s legislative and conference planning committees, ensuring student voices were heard at every level. Several members participated in the Day at the Capitol, advocating for TPA’s legislative priorities, while the senate leadership represented student interests nationally at the SPTA Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.

Throughout the year, the senate remained committed to advocacy and student wellness. They engaged in initiatives supporting key legislation and expanded efforts to connect students with therapy resources beyond their academic networks.

The year wrapped up with further recruitment—bringing in members from three additional doctoral programs—and preparing to present once again at the upcoming 2025 conference. With new leadership in place and momentum strong, the Student Senate is poised for another impactful year ahead.
